Vitreo-Retina Clinic

Retinal diseases are the leading causes of low vision and blindness in Nepal. Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are rising in Nepal with an associated increase in vitreo-retinal problems of diabetic retinopathy, and retinal venous occlusions resulting in a sequelae leading to blindness. With increase in life expectancy, age related macular degeneration is an emerging cause of blindness among the elderly. The retinal problems like retinal detachment, macular diseases, traumatic sequelae, hereditary retinal diseases, and retinal drug toxicity are also common. 

The Vitreo-Retinal Clinic Setup at Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology has the necessary infrastructure, well-trained personnel and the capacity to handle a large number of patients suffering from vitreo-retinal problems.

This department has two sub divisions. Medical retina which provides curative services by medication, or Lasers and or intravitreal injections. Surgical Retina which provides services by performing surgeries to treat eye problems involving the retina, macula, and vitreous humor. The major diseases treated surgically include retinal detachment, macular hole, epi retinal membrane and complications related to diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and trauma etc.

TIO has state of the art modern vitreo-retinal Operation Theater for various vitreo-retinal surgery. The modern micro-incision vitrectomy surgery (23, G, 25 G, and 27 G) is widely performed. All kinds of vitreo-retinal surgical facilities are available both in general and local anaesthesia. The major services provided under the department includes 

  • Regular retinal diseases screening, evaluation, and management 
  • Vitre-retinal surgeries for all kinds of surgical vitreo-retinal problems like retinal detachment, macular problems, tractional retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, endophthalmitis etc. 
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening, laser treatment, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (Anti VEGF) treatment and surgical management in advanced stages.
  • Laser therapy: Conventional/ PASCAL modality, with facilities of Micropulse Laser 
  • Cryotherapy
  • Intravitreal injections of steroids and antiVEGF such as Bevacizumab and other antiVEGFs.
