Indian President Presents Padma Shri Award to Dr. Ruit
President of India, Ram Nath Kovind presented the Padma Shri award to Executive Director Prof. Dr. Sanduk Ruit On the occasion of 69th Republic Day of India.
Prof. Dr. Ruit has been introduced as “game changer in restoring the vision of the poor, through low-cost cataract surgery. Dr. Ruit, whose innovation in the 1980s led to a 90 percent reduction in the cost of cataract eye surgery, provides low-cost cataract surgery lenses to over thirty countries. Treating 2,500 patients every week, fees are waived off for those who cannot afford and in over 30 years has restored the eyesight of 1,50,000 people across Asia and Africa and reached out to blind people who could not make it to Kathmandu, by trekking himself to those areas.”
Padma Shri Award is considered as one the prestigious civilian awards presented by the government of India.
